Introduction

As the world digitizes, it’s only a matter of time before our driver license gets the same treatment. Our current IDs, however, come with a set of their own problems. Physical IDs suffer from a lack of hierarchy and unclear visuals, with current digital IDs looking exactly like their physical counterparts.

The solution here was to redesign our ID to properly make use of the digital format, rather than simply being a recreation of the physical variant. In addition, an update of how information was displayed and the visuals were also required.

Goals

This project had three goals.

1. Update hierarchy to display information clearly

2. Update visuals to make them look more interesting and modern, while also not changing enough to make using the app confusing

3.Better represent the state of New York

Comparative Analysis

The Apple Weather app had a good flow of information that uses the phone screen to a good degree. The user is able to scroll, which minimizes some information in favor of newer information

Card Based Design

The card based design in apps is an easy and convenient way to display separate segments of information in an organized manner.

Inspiration Board

Sketches

The sketches focused on different ways to use and navigate around cards on a phone.

Visual Designs

This first set of wireframes experimented with ways to display cards, as well as trying out new typographical hierarchy not seen on current IDs.
Further experimentation with the cards shown here, with them now taking up the entire screen to better use the space. Color was added to differentiate between the two IDs.
The color of the card and the background were swapped for better contrast for the words on them, as well as experimentation with font weight and colors for readability.
The size of the card was decreased to better accomodate the margins, and font weights and sizes were adjusted for readability.

Branding Ideation

The branding on the home page went through levels of experimentation to capture the look of New York while also keeping it relevant to design choices that were already made.

Final Designs

The final composition embraced a modern thin typographical design. It also includes a repeating text pattern in the background for some visual interest in the otherwise plain background.

Takeaways

This project taught me a lot of things. It taught me the importance of iteration, as it showed me just how important the feedback loop is when designing. In addition, being able to see your design evolve over time is valuable in measuring your improvement. Another thing this project taught me was that branding is something that I need to work on. Through the iterations, I tried a few different approaches that ultimately did not match up well with my existing designs. A lot more thought has to go into branding than I initially believed.
